In 1972, Wim Crouwel and his Total Design company created an identity system for the Municipality of Rotterdam. The Gemeente Rotterdam identity used a hexagon grid to visually represent the city in an abstracted way.

i think this resolves the perception issue (read characteristic of the chosen projection) that makes people think continents in the southern hemisphere are smaller than they really are. because we all had to watch that 5 minutes of the west wing in the intro to gis class.
